The celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd began in the United States in 1970 and was the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson, who had long pondered about finding a way to "put the environment into the political 'limelight' once and for all" . Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect about what you are doing to help protect the environment. There are many ways that you can celebrate alone and with others.

1. Plant trees

In the context of global warming, low carbon economy based on low energy consumption and low pollution has become a global hot spot. Energy saving and emission reduction is imperative. Low carbon development has gradually become an inevitable trend of social development. Low carbon life is not only an attitude, an obligation, but also a responsibility. To reduce carbon emissions, not only is the international and national things, for our living environment is the rapid deterioration in every place, every department, every one of us should take positive action, actively promote and to practice low-carbon life. We should start with the following points:

We are a group of twelve and thirteen-year-olds from Canada trying to make a difference:Vanessa Suttie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quigg and me. We raised all the money ourselves to come six thousand miles to tell you adults you must change your ways. Coming here today, I have no hidden agenda. I am fighting for my future.

You don’t know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer. You don’t know how to bring salmon back up a dead stream. You don’t know how to bring back an animal now you can’t bring back forests that once grew where there is now desert. If you don’t know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!

Here, you may be delegates of your governments, business people, organisers, reporters or poiticians – but really you are mothers and fathers, brothers and sister, aunts and uncles – and all of you are somebody’s child.

I can’t stop thinking that these children are my age, that it makes a tremendous difference where you are born, that I could be one of those children living in the Favellas of Rio; I could be a child starving in Somalia; a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India.

I’m only a child yet I know if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environmental answers, what a wonderful place this earth would be!

At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us to behave in the world. You teach us: not to fight with others, to respect others, to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share – not be greedy.
在學校，甚至在幼稚園，你們大人教我們如何處世，你們告訴我們不要打架，要尊重對方。找出答案，解決矛盾。去分享，而不是貪婪。
Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do?
你們大人為什麼去做與你們教導孩子相反的事情呢?
Do not forget why you’re attending these conferences, who you’re doing this for — we are your own children. You are deciding what kind of world we will grow up in. Parents should be able to comfort their children by saying “everyting’s going to be alright” , “we’re doing the best we can” and “it’s not the end of the world”.
不要忘記你們為何而來到這裡開會，你們為誰做事情?我們是你們的下一代，你們正在決定我們將要在一個什麼樣的環境中成長，父母需要能夠寬慰孩子們，告訴他們“一切都沒問題，那不是世界末日，我們正在盡其所能的改變”。
