在寫推薦信時,必然會提及被推薦人的品(characters)。介紹每個人獨特的個性用詞也十分講究，下列characters是國外大學所欣賞的：

推薦信要儘量避免使用那些對人人都適用的評語，而應力求反映一個學生的特點。例如，在專業領域中遇到難題時的意志和動力、創新精神和求知慾、對新事物的反應能力、對陌生事物或環境的適應能力、人際溝通與處理人際關係的能力、領導才能、事業心與責任感、課堂講授還或科研工作中表現出來的特長或弱點，等等。
★學生當然只可能具備其中某一些優點。
★應舉例說明，如曾經獲得的獎勵、發表過的論文、參加過的重要學術會議，以及在學生組織或教學組織中的任職，等等。
在推薦信中要注意的其它事項是：
★★推薦人應該對學生的學習或專業工作情況比較熟悉；
★★實事求是，既要不誇張其辭，也不要低估學生的能力；
★★不要用套話，但介紹學生的情況要具體、詳細，不要寫得過於簡單；
★★學生在教學活動以外的其它表現和成就，可以作簡略的介紹，這也可以從一個側面反映學生的特點。
您永遠不可能有第二次機會給人留下第一印象。您的申請材料就是院校對您產生的“第一印象”，它將提供證明您值得錄取的機會，並表明您已經具備了足夠的學識基礎以攻讀所申請修讀的課程。

requested a letter of reference from me to support his application for the postdoctoral position in your laboratory. as his former advisor, i think highly of , therefore i am very delighted to comply with his request.
