Ladies and Gentlemen: My topic is Honesty.
As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman,the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’stooth. This is a true story.
65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. Heoften visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there,which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted oneto keep as a treasure.
In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had toleave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one ofthe teeth from the dragon’s mouth.
He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at havingstolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on hisconscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decidedto put right his childish error. In 20__, he visited Qingdao and returned it tothe Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.
When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported onhis visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I thinkto err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correctone’s error.
Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep anhonest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of myfriends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.

Research experience and academic activity
When a sophomore, I joined the Association of AI Enthusiast and began tonarrow down my interest for my future research. With the tool of OpenGL andMatlab, I designed a simulationprogram for transportation scheduling system. Itis now widely used by different research groups in NUST. I assumed and fulfilleda sewage analysis & dispose project for Nanjing sewagetreatment plant. Thiswas my first practice to convert a laboratory idea to a commercial product.
In retrospect, I find myself standing on a solid basis in both theory andexperience, which has prepared me for the Ph.D. program. My future researchinterests include: Network Scheduling Problem, Heuristic Algorithm research(especially in GA and Neural network), Supply chain network research, Hybridsystem performance analysis with Petri nets and Data Mining.

If I were a boy again, I would practice perseverance(毅力)more often, andnever give up a thing because it was hard or inconvenient. If we want light, wemust conquer darkness. Perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results.“There are only two creatures,” says a proverb, “who can surmount thepyramids—the eagle and the snail.”
If I were a boy again, I would school myself into a habit of attention; Iwould let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. I would remember thata good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. The habit ofattention becomes part of our life, if we begin early enough. I often heargrown-up people say “I could not fix my attention on the lecture or book,although I wished to do so” , and the reason is, the habit was not formed inyouth.
If I were to live my life over again, I would pay more attention to thecultivation of the memory. I would strengthen that faculty by every possiblemeans, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first toremember things accurately; but memory soon helps itself, and gives very littletrouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power.
If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side. Life is very muchlike a mirror: if you smile upon it, I smile back upon you; but if you frown andlook doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return.
Inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that comein contact with it. “who shuts love out ,in turn shall be shut out fromlove.”
Finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the solepurpose of life, I would, if I were a boy again, I would still try harder tomake others happy.

As the famous Russian litterateur Lev Tolstoy said, “Ideal is the beacon. Without ideal, there is no secure direction; without a direction, there is no life.” So there’s no doubt that everyone needs his or her own ideal. Have you ever thought that what is practical and sensible will connect with our most treasured dreams? Maybe, to somebody, reality has little relation to ideal. To others nothing can be done without the sense of reality. So make our dreams a part of our reality. And make our reality a part of our dreams. There is no reason why our dreams must oppose our reality. Improve our dreams and our reality by bringing them together.
As a university student, establishing a dream is one of the most important things we have to do everyone must see the reality clearly at first. Your family condition, your personal ability, your social intercourse, your subject and the job you want to do, these things show you the reality and lead you to establish a dream.
Further more, difficult or otherwise, we should put the power of reality into our dreams. Last but not least remember to work hard at the task of chasing our dreams. Do believe that we can achieve our ideal step by step by the passage of time!

The best things can come from the worst experiences
Once, when I was in Sicily, I was swindled by a stranger for a hundreddollars. At first I was devastated. I spent the entire next day thinking aboutwhat I should have done to keep my money, and what I would do if I had it. Butwhat I learned from this about humanity, about the nature of good and evilwithin people, and how circumstances force them to do bad things showed me a lotabout myself and how to cope with misfortune.

How to use time effectively
In our world, there are always existing side by side two kinds of one hand, some people can do well in many things in their everyday life andthey seem to have much time than the others. On the other hand, a majority ofpeople complain about they have too much work to do and has no time to exerciseor even just sit down for a while. This difference comes from the attitudetowards time of a person. So, which way is the most effective way to usetime?
Firstly, the concept of the value of time in the mind of a persondetermines how he spends his time. Among my classmates, there have two studentshave two different opinions of time. One is always in diligent study for hisidea that time is flying and the past time will not come again. Therefore, hehas got good marks and achieved many accomplishments in college. In contrary,the other student does not notice the importance of time so he is occupied withnothing everyday. Obviously, he has attempted and accomplished nothing but livedhis life leisurely and carefree. Thus, a positive attitude towards time is goodfor using time effectively.
Secondly, reasonable arrangements of the time of a person contribute to hisuse of time effectively. Once I was busy with my daily life because I had toprepare for TEM6 of English and did sport besides took classes. However, I couldnot do them all every day. One day I discussed with my teacher about myaffliction, then I accepted his advice to arrange my time to distinguish whichthing was must to do and which was not necessary. A few days later, I did my jobwith skill and ease.
At last, once a person make his mind to do something, then, action. If onetakes account of too many things before to do one thing, he will waste too muchtime, even lost confidence to do it. This is one of the reasons why a largenumber of people can not use their time effectively.
To sum up, in order to use time effectively, one should look on his timepositively, notice the importance of it and arrange it reasonable and actionquickly. As the saying goes “An inch of time is more precious than one inch ofgold”, we should cherish time from mow.
Never shall i forget the first english lesson given by miss liu. on thatday， when she entered the classroom， we found that she was a young and beautifullady with a big smile on her face. then she introduced herself saying that weshould call her miss liu instead of teacher liu， a moment later， she let all ofus go to the blackboard and say something about ourselves in english in it was my turn， i felt so shy and fearful that i didn’t dare to say a wordbefore the class. she came up to me and said kindly， “don’t be afraid. i believeyou can do it. come and have a try.” my face turned red when i heard that. atlast， i went to the blackboard and was able to do it quite well. she praised forwhat i had done. up to now， i can still remember her words in the first englishlesson： “practice makes perfect. don’t lose your courage when you meet withdifficulties. try on and on until you succeed.”
Travel is avery good means of broadening a person39s perspective. It makesyou come intocontact with different cultures， meet people of different colorsand go through peculiarrites and ceremonies. Travelling much， you will not on lyenrich your knowledge andexperiences， but also be aware of the vastness ofnature. Travel may also relieve personof boredom and gloom. Travelers can choose different modesoftransportation which have advantage s and disadvantages. Airplanes are thefastest butalso the most expensive. Bus es and trains are less expensive， butthey soon make youfeel cramped and unco mfortable. Ships provide you withcomfort unless you get people c an afford traveling by bicycle，which， although slow， can limber upyour mus cles and get you closer to nature. Ilove eling not only broadens my horizons but also opens my eye sto the 39s more it refreshes me. You can go to Disneyland and experience whatit39s like to be “a child again” You can visit one of the “sevenwonders of theworld” such as the Grand Canyon and feel the magnificence of nature You can taste the“magicial” ice water on a glacier which can help yo ubecome more beautiful and makeyou live longer. Just forget all trifles and burdens that you have in your mind. Experienceis a type of living knowledge. You39ll be sure to experience many new things whentraveling.
