推薦信的基本構成要素除信頭(學校信紙的信頭或推薦人住址)、發信日期、收信人姓名、地址、稱呼、信尾謙稱、親筆簽名、推薦人姓名、職務等必要部份外，本文內容應包含下列各項：

被推薦者全名：不可全文中都只寫 mr. huang 或 miss wu，需明確寫出被推薦者的全名至少一次。英文名字拼法需與其他檔案相同。

認識期間：何時開始認識?或認識多久?

一封完整的推薦信主要包含以下內容：

你是誰?你與申請者是什麼關係?申請者有什麼技能及優點等，此外還要留下你的聯絡方式，以便對方進行了解核實。

下面我們來詳細的介紹下英文推薦信的格式，來幫助教師和教授寫好一封英文推薦信。

假如你的英文推薦信是要寫給申請院校的某位教授，那麼首先要加上稱呼，比如“Dear h”、 “dear ms. Li”等。

英文推薦信的首段應該說明你和申請者的關係，包括你是如何認識他(她)的、你和他(她)的關係如何以及你的職務等。

在第二段中，推薦人應該寫明申請者的個人資訊。包括：申請者的個人基本資訊、申請者的能力、在校表現、是否獲得獎勵、是否發表過學術論文或釋出過科研成果以及你為他(她)撰寫推薦信的原因。
