1. 詳實的個人材料夾

教授要寫好一封推薦信，需要你提供詳實的個人材料。即使在一所很小的大學裡，每個教授一學期也要教許多學生。如果教授從你那僅僅得到是成績單，那麼在推薦信中他只能提到你這幾年的學習成績。如果你希望得到的是一封優秀的推薦信，那麼你就需要整理出自己的個人材料，準備一個詳盡的檔案夾，並清楚的標明你的全名。你的個人材料資料夾需要包括以下材料：

1)成績單(如果GPA在3.0至4.0之間，當然不錯。)

2)簡歷。你的簡歷應突出你所參與的義工，和你選修的與申請的大學有關的課程。這樣，你的教授便會較全面的瞭解你。如果這些他們都知道，那就不妨再提醒他們一次。

3)與之相關的表格等等，你都需要把他們一併放入相應的貼好郵票的信封內。

4)可能的話，最好附上官方的成績單。

5)個人陳述和學業目標(半頁紙)。聽起來有點老套，但是仔細想想，教授們更喜歡有遠大志向的學生。也就是說，一個學生如果沒有明確的方向，會給你的教授留下不太好的印象。如果沒有具體的實施步驟，也許你的教授會認為你還沒有為將來的學習作好準備。

2. 提前預約見面時間

預約見面的最佳時間是在信發出前的兩週，與你的教授預約依次簡短會面，談論一下推薦信的事情。記得一定要提前5分鐘到達，並且著裝要整潔。不必穿正裝，但是一定要讓別人看起來很舒服。從你的著裝表明了你要談較正式的問題。

3. 作好調研工作

一定要提前研究你所申請的學校。這樣不僅會有利於你的應試申請，而且也向你的教授表明了你對那所大學是認真的。你想就讀的大學學術氛圍如何?學校的競爭程度、屬於傳統型，還是創新型?學者們喜歡那些知道應該談論什麼的人。

4. 徵求建議

徵求導師對於你學業的建議，這樣你會把你們的關係拉近距離。大多數導師喜歡談論他們自己領域的事情。事實上，他們很難發現人們是否真的對他們的學術領域感興趣。舉個例子，你對英國文學非常感興趣，這將會使一些英語教授感到高興。另外，如果你真的對某教授的課程感興趣，那一定要告訴他，告訴他你是如何被他的課程所吸引的。

5. 學習他人
