A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it.
"Is this your car, Mister?" he said.
Paul nodded. "My brother gave it to me for Christmas." The boy was astounded. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing? Boy, I wish . . ." He hesitated.
Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels.
"I wish," the boy went on, "That I could be a brother like that."
Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?"
"Oh yes, Id love that."
After a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes aglow, said, "Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?"
Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked.
He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car.
"There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day Im gonna give you one just like it . . . then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that Ive been trying to tell you about." Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride. When a fortune-teller look at your palm，she'll tell you how your future will be like.That's a way you place your hope on.But it's not realistic.The future is the things and people around you.What you should do is to try to do everything well，don't care much about the results.Be kind to all the people around you，and love them.Although the world is not full of love，the life is not a bed of rose，you should sdick on your belief.When time passes，you'll find everything you do is worthwhile.
Years is glorious.Because no way you can stop time from elasping.How time flies!Just like the flowers in spring，the sunshine in summer，the moon in mid-autumn and the snow in winter.Maybe one morning you'll never wake up，you'll never see the sunrise or the sunset;you'll never see your sweatheart or talk to her，you'll never hear the sound of the nature or wander on the path among the trees，you'll never swim in the lake or climb the mountains.

In my 18 years of life， there have been many things. University days are the best part of them. I can never forget the days when I stepped into my university. I was impressed by its garden-like campus， its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. I at once fell in love with it.
After the arduous military training， I get absolutely absorbed in my studies. The classes given by the teachers are excellent. They provide us with information not only from our textbooks but from many other sources as well. They easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as I can.

It's a great honor for me to stand here to deliver a speech to you. Then today I want to talk something about dreams and reality.
As the famous Russian litterateur Lev Tolstoy (列夫、托爾斯泰)said, “Ideal is the beacon(煙火、燈塔). Without ideal, there is no secure (無慮的, 安全的, 安心的, 可靠的, 保險的)direction; without a direction, there is no life.” So there’s no doubt that everyone needs his or her own ideal. Have you ever thought that what is practical and sensible(.明智的, 有感覺的, 明理的) will connect with our most treasured dreams? Maybe, to somebody, reality has little relation to ideal. To others nothing can be done without the sense of reality. So make our dreams a part of our reality. And make our reality a part of our dreams. There is no reason why our dreams must oppose our reality. Improve our dreams and our reality by bringing them together.
As a university student, establishing a dream is one of the most important things we have to do .But everyone must see the reality clearly at first. Your family condition, your personal ability, your social intercourse (交往、交流), your subject and the job you want to do, these things show you the reality and lead you to establish a dream.
Further more, difficult or otherwise, we should put the power of reality into our dreams. Last but not least remember to work hard at the task of chasing 追逐our dreams. Do believe that we can achieve our ideal step by step by the passage of time!

We have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. We have reasons to say proudly： we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition is even bigger, our challenges are great, but our will is even greater.
I am Chinese. I have inherited black hair and black eyes. I have inherited the virtues of my ancestors. I have also taken over responsibility. I am sure, that wherever I go, whatever I do, I shall never forget that I am Chinese!

My Definition of Success
“Once upon a time， there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. To all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible. One day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince..." Well, you know the rest. The three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.
And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "And they live happily every after."
Why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I would say, so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. That's why we greatly admire Stephen Hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.
I myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.But I chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. Now here I am. If I come out first, it will be a great success for me. If I come out last-I hope this will not be the case-but if I come out last, I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. For me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because I have truly gained by participating.
Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. The ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

為什麼我們對如此美妙、如此不切實際,而我要說,如此缺乏想象力的東西這麼樂此不疲呢?這樣的故事又如何能夠經歷幾代人的重複?我想，因為它是典型的成功的例子。故事的思想性很強，具有代表性。通過故事帶給我們的啟示，我們認識到了成功定義中的四個步驟;第一，目標的設定，有如故事裡美麗的公主;第二，所遇到的困難和挑戰，就像三大任務;第三，克服困難的過程，故事中青年經歷重重難關可以作為象徵;第四，就是成功的果實，如同幸福的婚姻。
這個故事不僅迎合了人們內心深處對成功的嚮往，也強調了過程和結果的不可分離。如果通往成功的道路崎嶇曲折，那麼成功的回報必然碩果累累，反之亦然。如果一個人繼承了父輩的百萬家產而生活得輕鬆富足，那麼，即使在物質上，他也不能算是個成功人士，因為，他的財富並沒有經過艱難困苦而獲得。確切地說，“成功”這個詞，不是個靜態簡單的定義。在我的理解中，真正意義上的成功是奮鬥的過程和經歷了奮鬥之後贏得的滿意的結果。請讓我另舉一例來闡明我的見解。
如果我們試著改變足球的比賽規則，將球門放得很大，換下大衛?希曼或其他任何的守門員，這樣，隨便哪個“大衛”，比如說，“大衛?貝克漢姆”，就可以輕鬆進球，然而這樣進一球卻不能給他帶來成功的震顫與喜悅。如果我們再改一改比賽規則，不讓阿森納隊的防守來守門，那麼，貝克漢姆只要動動手，其實就是抬抬腳就能進一球，那樣的話、，實際上也沒有什麼比賽可言了，因為贏球的意義已經不存在了。在接受挑戰、克服困難和經歷磨難的過程中，“成功”的價值才得以豐滿。取得成果的意義和所克服的艱難的程度成正比。所謂成功的概念不是一成不變的.而曇相對而言的,因為困難的性質也是相對意義上的。
正常人不費力氣做成的事對於一個殘疾人來說也許相當困難。獲得了同正常人一樣的能力，這個殘疾人就獲得了成功。這便是我們為什麼崇敬史蒂芬?霍金的原因—雖然行動不便，受到了輪椅的限制，他依然為科學界作出了巨大的貢獻。
就我自己而言，生性羞澀，容易怯場，不得不鼓起非常大的勇氣來參加此次的演講比賽。我完全可以待在一邊，不參加大學級別的比賽，而落得輕鬆自在。可是，我還是選擇了接受這一挑戰來面對困難。現在我來了，如果我能夠得第一的話.這對我來說就是巨大的成功。如果，我是最後一名—我希望情況不是這樣—但如果我真的是最後一名，我也不會認為這次的嘗試是一次失敗，反而我要把它當作一次真正的成功來慶賀，因為我一部分的目標是對自己性格的鍛鍊—更加堅強、勇敢地面對困難。對我來說，這標誌著我在通向成功人生的漫漫征途中又向前邁進了一步，儘管是很小的一步，但是我確實通過參與真正地獲得了收益。

Our great motherland is one of the largest countries in the world. It has a population of over twelve hundred million. Beijing is its capital.
We Chinese people are brave and hardworking. We have a glorious revolutionary tradition. We drove out all the enemies. In 1949 the People's Republic of China was founded. Since then great changes have taken place in our motherland. Now our country is getting stronger and stronger. We Chinese people are working hard to make our motherland into a powerful country.
Children are regarded as “flower of our motherland”. In our country children are taken very good care of. Special laws have been issuedto protect them. Thousands of schools have been set up to make education available to all children. The Party and the government pay special attention to the growth of children because they represent our bright future.
For our students， marks is above everything. Teachers will judge us fromour marks. With marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. With marks，we can be enrolled into senior middle schools. With marks we can be enrolledinto college. With marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrinestudies. Still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad forfurther studies. Our parents will be strict with us with the marks. Our societyjudge us from marks. However， sometimes we students compare one another withmarks directly. We are completely controlled by marks. We like them and we feelsorry for them. But what attitude towards our marks should we take?
Truly， marks functions cannot be underestimated. In terms of test in ourstudy， marks are fair and real. That is the reason why we say "Everyone is equalbefore marks. "
However， I think marks are the sole standard to judge the success orfailure of students in exams. Sometimes， marks more than ten or less than one ortwo in our exams comparing with others mean not everything. The success orfailure in exams will be influenced by experience on the spot and the examinee’shealth etc. Once in a while one cannot fail in exams. " Success or failure iscommon sense for military. " I think everyone is familiar with the famoussaying. Don’t you think such will be the case with our study? In exams， onecannot be " never-defeated general" . Even though one will be very good ineveryday study， he cannot succeed in every exam sometimes. We can get proof fromthe fact that the very best one we call "Number One Scholar" in the entranceexams for college and ordinary middle school and specialized secondary schoolover the years is not eminent above all others nor top student in everystudy.
As a matter of fact， "high marks" and "ability" are not unified. Some timeago， a new phrase " high marks but poor competence" came into being. Once Ihappened to meet such a teacher as this .It is said that the teacher justgraduated from a far-famed key university. But his teaching result is much lessthan that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned college. Whenlecturing， the teacher only repeated what the text-books says， which was verydull so the his students’ interest in learning was not aroused. His teaching wasshort of unity of teaching and learning. At present there is a fact that we knowa few brilliant and top college graduates are not qualified for their posts. Thereason for it may be lack of the ability to combine knowledge learnt from bookswith pragmatics in their work. Who was the most well-known figure in China last month? It’s Ma JiaJue—the college student who murdered 4 of his roommates. Many people attributed his crime to his poverty and deficient education. In my opinion, his crime also has much to do with his classmates’ indifference.
Indifference is a terrible disease in today’s colleges and the whole society. It’s not rare that two students who have studied together for 4 years have never spoken to each other. It’s not rare that a student who has been absent from class for several days is not noticed at all. It’s also not rare that a student who has severe psychological problems is not cared about at all.
Some people may say ‘What the students with psychological problems like Ma JiaJue need is not care but psychotherapy.” However, when people are ill, what they need most is not only medical treatment, but also care from people around them. Australia is one of the famous Oceanian country. The country is famous for its wool production and seashore tour. As the climate there is warm and comfortable, many people spend vocations there every year. I’m a super fan of water entertainment, so I choose it as my destination.
In Australia, the sky is bluer than blue, the clouds are whiter than white, all the local people enjoy an optimistic and active life. They also show their kindness and enthusiasm to the tourists.
The first step should be Sydney Opera which is among the most brilliant and splendid architectures in the world. Many world-class plays are put on in it .The surface and shape of it is like a seashell with glory decorations inside.
Then Melbourne is a good choice to be as the next step. In Melbourne, skin screen is a must to take with as the sunshine is upset and may burn your skin. The most attractive thing to me is the Australia Open, which is one of the biggest world-class tennis competition. Many great players such as Roddick Federer and its local player Hewitt etc. gather to compete. It’s really a feast for the eyes.

I have been in University for about one year. During my stay here, I came to realize that university life is like drinking coke. We experience all tastes of life here, sour, sweet, bitter and hot.
I am from Province, which is far away from here. I often miss my Mum, friends, and relatives in my hometown. However, I can't see them very often. So loneliness always keeps me company. I am sad that I can't be there with them.
Lucky for me, life in university is rich and colorful. With more free time,we can do many more things besides study, such as joining societies clubs, and taking part-time jobs. I received a devastating blow to my self-confidence in the first interview of my college years. I applied to be a host in our Student Acting Troupe and felt confident that I would be accepted. But one of the panel members told me: "You seem inadequate and you are a little vertically-challenged." My life has never been the same since. I used bigger heels to complement my height and psychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. But no matter how hard I tried to look the part, there was still something missing.
As president of English Club, I organized the rehearsal of Snow White for an English party. Unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the last dwarf. It had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in English. Suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and I knew I would have to be the dwarf. To my great surprise and delight, once on stage, I was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. As the dwarf, I was a big hit.
Yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. Cultivating our individuality will transform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and textures.
A world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. The real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.
Given a choice, I would rather be ugly than live in such a world. I'd rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a Snow White than be a Snow White among nothing but Snow Whites. I would rather be myself. In our current society, we can’t be more familiar with the phrase ----the low carbon economy. We all take it for granted due to the fact the concept of low carbon economy enjoys a higher and higher popularity in our daily life, especially after today’s speech contestJ .But how can we achieve the goal of low carbon economy?
While some hold the opinion that it is a matter of the government or it is the business of some big enterprises or companies, and it has nothing to do with us. However, to achieve the aim of low carbon economy, the efforts of governments or enterprises is far from enough. Low carbon economy can’t go further without low carbon life styles. They are going side by side with each other.
So what’s low carbon life style?
Let’s look back on our daily life. Every morning as soon as you open your eyes, are you used to turn on the lights immediately when the room is bright enough as long as you draw the window curtains apart? Is that your habit that when you are brushing your teeth you leave the water tap running on? Are you accustomed to setting the temperature of the air conditioner in your office below 26 degrees Celsius? In general, A low-carbon lifestyle covers many aspects of our modern life, such as cooking, transportation, home heating, and holiday travel, which can be conducted in a way that gives the maximum reduction of personal carbon emissions. It is a life with low energy, low consumption, low expenses.
Nowadays, in our country, a newly emerging generation----- “low carbon generation” in the metropolis has set a good example for us. Traditional clockwork alarm has regained their preference instead of electronic alarm clock; they make sure to turn off the electric equipments like computers or lights after use; they try their clothes under the sunshine while avoiding tumble dryers; what’s more, they jog in the park nearby to replace the 30-min exercise on the electric treadmill; Paper cups will no longer be held in our hands and so on. The “low carbon generation” are taking immediate actions in every details of their life to demonstrate that low carbon economy is not the responsibility of governments or companies, but our duty as individuals. So, not only does low carbon life style mean a style of life, it means an attitude towards life.
