Farewell, Indifference
Who was the most well-known figure in China last month? It’s Ma JiaJue—the college student who murdered 4 of his roommates. Many people attributed his crime to his poverty and deficient education. In my opinion, his crime also has much to do with his classmates’ indifference.
Indifference is a terrible disease in today’s colleges and the whole society. It’s not rare that two students who have studied together for 4 years have never spoken to each other. It’s not rare that a student who has been absent from class for several days is not noticed at all. It’s also not rare that a student who has severe psychological problems is not cared about at all.
Some people may say ‘What the students with psychological problems like Ma JiaJue need is not care but psychotherapy.” However, when people are ill, what they need most is not only medical treatment, but also care from people around them. Every smile and every caring word will bring sunshine to their life.
I once heard one of my roommates who was an introverted girl sobbing at mid-night. Being afraid of disturbing her, I sent a text message to comfort her. The next day, she told me that she was crying for not being invited to one of her friend’s birthday party. She thought she was neglected by others. But my message was really comforting which told her someone still cared about her.
What can we do to prevent the tragedy of Ma JiaJue from happening again? Some people may say ‘Let’s open more psychological courses in schools.’ and other people may say ‘Let’s donate more money for the poor students.’ But I’ll say “My fellow student, let’s give more love and care to our roommates, our classmates and every person around us!”
走出冷漠
誰是中國上個月最有名的人物? 這當然要數馬加爵了——這個殺害了四名同學的大學生。很多人將他的犯罪歸結於他的貧窮和不全面的教育。但我覺得他的犯罪還跟他周圍同學的冷漠有很大關係。
冷漠是流行於當今校園及整個社會中的一種可怕的疾病。有的同學在一起學習了4年卻從未說過話，有的同學幾天沒去上課卻無人知曉，還有的同學有了嚴重的心理問題卻得不到關心。
有人說：像馬加爵那樣有心理問題的人需要的不是關心而是心理治療。但在一個人生病的時候，除了醫生的治療，他需要的還有周圍人的關心。一個微笑，一聲問候都能為他們的生活帶來陽光。
有一天半夜，我碰巧聽見寢室裡一個平時很內向的女孩在輕聲抽泣。為了不驚動她，我給她發了一條簡訊來安慰她。第二天，他告訴我那晚她哭了是因為她的一位好朋友開生日聚會沒有請她參加，她覺得自己被大家所忽視了。但我對簡訊卻給了她很大安慰，讓她覺得還是有人惦記著她的。
如何才能阻止馬加爵的悲劇重演呢?有人呼籲應該在學校開設更多的心理輔導課程，有人建議應該給貧困學生更多的捐助，而我要說的是：同學們，讓我們把更多的關愛帶給我們的舍友，同學和身邊的每一個人!
My Definition of Success
“Once upon a time， there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. To all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible. One day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince..." Well, you know the rest. The three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.
And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "And they live happily every after."
Why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I would say, so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. That's why we greatly admire Stephen Hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.
I myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level I chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. Now here I am. If I come out first, it will be a great success for me. If I come out last-I hope this will not be the case-but if I come out last, I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. For me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because I have truly gained by participating.
Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. The ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

為什麼我們對如此美妙、如此不切實際,而我要說,如此缺乏想象力的東西這麼樂此不疲呢?這樣的故事又如何能夠經歷幾代人的重複?我想，因為它是典型的成功的例子。故事的思想性很強，具有代表性。通過故事帶給我們的啟示，我們認識到了成功定義中的四個步驟;第一，目標的設定，有如故事裡美麗的公主;第二，所遇到的困難和挑戰，就像三大任務;第三，克服困難的過程，故事中青年經歷重重難關可以作為象徵;第四，就是成功的果實，如同幸福的婚姻。
這個故事不僅迎合了人們內心深處對成功的嚮往，也強調了過程和結果的不可分離。如果通往成功的道路崎嶇曲折，那麼成功的回報必然碩果累累，反之亦然。如果一個人繼承了父輩的百萬家產而生活得輕鬆富足，那麼，即使在物質上，他也不能算是個成功人士，因為，他的財富並沒有經過艱難困苦而獲得。確切地說，“成功”這個詞，不是個靜態簡單的定義。在我的理解中，真正意義上的成功是奮鬥的過程和經歷了奮鬥之後贏得的滿意的結果。請讓我另舉一例來闡明我的見解。
如果我們試著改變足球的比賽規則，將球門放得很大，換下大衛?希曼或其他任何的守門員，這樣，隨便哪個“大衛”，比如說，“大衛?貝克漢姆”，就可以輕鬆進球，然而這樣進一球卻不能給他帶來成功的震顫與喜悅。如果我們再改一改比賽規則，不讓阿森納隊的防守來守門，那麼，貝克漢姆只要動動手，其實就是抬抬腳就能進一球，那樣的話、，實際上也沒有什麼比賽可言了，因為贏球的意義已經不存在了。在接受挑戰、克服困難和經歷磨難的過程中，“成功”的價值才得以豐滿。取得成果的意義和所克服的艱難的程度成正比。所謂成功的概念不是一成不變的.而曇相對而言的,因為困難的性質也是相對意義上的。
正常人不費力氣做成的事對於一個殘疾人來說也許相當困難。獲得了同正常人一樣的能力，這個殘疾人就獲得了成功。這便是我們為什麼崇敬史蒂芬?霍金的原因—雖然行動不便，受到了輪椅的限制，他依然為科學界作出了巨大的貢獻。
就我自己而言，生性羞澀，容易怯場，不得不鼓起非常大的勇氣來參加此次的演講比賽。我完全可以待在一邊，不參加大學級別的比賽，而落得輕鬆自在。可是，我還是選擇了接受這一挑戰來面對困難。現在我來了，如果我能夠得第一的話.這對我來說就是巨大的成功。如果，我是最後一名—我希望情況不是這樣—但如果我真的是最後一名，我也不會認為這次的嘗試是一次失敗，反而我要把它當作一次真正的成功來慶賀，因為我一部分的目標是對自己性格的鍛鍊—更加堅強、勇敢地面對困難。對我來說，這標誌著我在通向成功人生的漫漫征途中又向前邁進了一步，儘管是很小的一步，但是我確實通過參與真正地獲得了收益。
回到我們年輕英俊的王子和對“成功”的四步驟定義上吧，您也許已經注意到了財富、地位和名譽等這些世俗的標準在故事中並未提及，相反故事強調了克服重重困難的過程。古代的智慧已經對成功的意義下了定義，這也是我的定義。

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude to me is more important than facts.
It is more important than the past,than education,than money,than circumstances, than failures,than successes,than what the other people think,say,or do.
It is more important than the appearance,the giftedness or skill.
It will make or break a company,a church ,a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day, regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.
We cannot change our cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the one stage we that is our attitudes.
I am convinced that life is ten percent what happens to me ,and ninety percent how I react to so it is with you.
We are in charge of our attitudes.
For our students， marks is above everything. Teachers will judge us fromour marks. With marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. With marks，we can be enrolled into senior middle schools. With marks we can be enrolledinto college. With marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrinestudies. Still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad forfurther studies. Our parents will be strict with us with the marks. Our societyjudge us from marks. However， sometimes we students compare one another withmarks directly. We are completely controlled by marks. We like them and we feelsorry for them. But what attitude towards our marks should we take?
Truly， marks functions cannot be underestimated. In terms of test in ourstudy， marks are fair and real. That is the reason why we say "Everyone is equalbefore marks. "
However， I think marks are the sole standard to judge the success orfailure of students in exams. Sometimes， marks more than ten or less than one ortwo in our exams comparing with others mean not everything. The success orfailure in exams will be influenced by experience on the spot and the examinee’shealth etc. Once in a while one cannot fail in exams. " Success or failure iscommon sense for military. " I think everyone is familiar with the famoussaying. Don’t you think such will be the case with our study? In exams， onecannot be " never-defeated general" . Even though one will be very good ineveryday study， he cannot succeed in every exam sometimes. We can get proof fromthe fact that the very best one we call "Number One Scholar" in the entranceexams for college and ordinary middle school and specialized secondary schoolover the years is not eminent above all others nor top student in everystudy.
As a matter of fact， "high marks" and "ability" are not unified. Some timeago， a new phrase " high marks but poor competence" came into being. Once Ihappened to meet such a teacher as this is said that the teacher justgraduated from a far-famed key university. But his teaching result is much lessthan that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned college. Whenlecturing， the teacher only repeated what the text-books says， which was verydull so the his students’ interest in learning was not aroused. His teaching wasshort of unity of teaching and learning. At present there is a fact that we knowa few brilliant and top college graduates are not qualified for their posts. Thereason for it may be lack of the ability to combine knowledge learnt from bookswith pragmatics in their work. Students of this kind will be successful in everyexam but they will be able to use freely their knowledge in their posts. Don’tyou think it waste training such persons for the country?
To sum up from the above， I can say marks are not absolutely authoritativefor some. If we neglect training and developing the students’ ability andcompetence and if we only seek for the high marks， we will be absolutely should take an objective attitude towards the marks. Neither should weneglect them nor should we overvalue them like a God.

I have been in University for about one year. During my stay here, I came to realize that university life is like drinking coke. We experience all tastes of life here, sour, sweet, bitter and hot.

I’m very glad to make a speech here! I’d like to tell you something about water saving.
As we know, nearly 75% of the Earth surface is covered with water, But about 97% of this huge amount is sea water or salt water. Man can only drink and use the rest 3%, but most of it has been polluted.
There are more than 400 cities poor with water in China. Millions of people don’t have enough water for drinking, many of them die because of lack of water . There are many big factories in China. They put the dirty and poisonous water in the river, such as the Yellow River, the Chang Jiang River, the Yangtze River and so on. It pollutes the river and makes people have many strange diseases. Many people don’t know how important the water is. They often think: I pay for the water I used, it’s none of others business. How foolish and how selfish the thought is. They don’t turn off the tap when they finish washing their hands in the public toilet because the water is free-paying. Most of the students in the university use big basins of water to wash fruits . Because they have paid a lot for the room fee. Some of the middle school students use the water for drinking to play jokes on others just for fun. But who has thought about our life in the future? Who has thought about the people without water? Who has thought about the future of the world?
Why don’t people know how to save it until we have lost it? Why don’t people know how important the water is until the last drop of water becomes our tears? Let’s save the water, for you, for me , for the future.
Reuse the water which you wash the fruits to clean the toilets. Reuse the water which you wash your face to clean the floor and furniture. Reuse the water which you wash the rice to water the flowers. I think it’s the good way to save water. It not only saves water but also saves money.
The water is just like our blood. To save water is to save our lives. Let’s keep every drop of water, for the people who don’t have enough water for drinking, for ourselves, for our children and children’s children。

Good morning everyone
It's a great honor for me to stand here to deliver a speech to you. Then today I want to talk something about dreams and reality.
As the famous Russian litterateur Lev Tolstoy (列夫、托爾斯泰)said, “Ideal is the beacon(煙火、燈塔). Without ideal, there is no secure (無慮的, 安全的, 安心的, 可靠的, 保險的)direction; without a direction, there is no life.” So there’s no doubt that everyone needs his or her own ideal. Have you ever thought that what is practical and sensible(.明智的, 有感覺的, 明理的) will connect with our most treasured dreams? Maybe, to somebody, reality has little relation to ideal. To others nothing can be done without the sense of reality. So make our dreams a part of our reality. And make our reality a part of our dreams. There is no reason why our dreams must oppose our reality. Improve our dreams and our reality by bringing them together.
As a university student, establishing a dream is one of the most important things we have to do everyone must see the reality clearly at first. Your family condition, your personal ability, your social intercourse (交往、交流), your subject and the job you want to do, these things show you the reality and lead you to establish a dream.
Further more, difficult or otherwise, we should put the power of reality into our dreams. Last but not least remember to work hard at the task of chasing 追逐our dreams. Do believe that we can achieve our ideal step by step by the passage of time!

It is true that we're still a developing nation, but it doesn't mean that we can despise ourselves. We have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. We have reasons to say proudly： we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition is even bigger, our challenges are great, but our will is even greater.

I have a pot of cactus, which the body was stabbed, the body is oval, plus a small thorn root straight Yo, looks like a lovely Xiaoci Wei. Cactus look really strange, it was neither the elegant peony, jasmine fragrance and no fragrance, and no graceful narcissus, but it does have a kind of vitality.

The world in which we live is a very beautiful world. About seven-tenths of the earth is water while three-tenths is land.
Water is “life food” of our earth.. It runs through mountains and valleys. It forms lakes and seas.
At the mouths of the rivers,fresh water joins the salt water of the sea. Here at the mouth of a river, there is very important plant and animal life.
What a beautiful day: The sun is shining and the sky is so blue. The land, oceans,mountains and rivers, plants and animals…everything looks bright and gay.
The sun gives us light, keeps us warm and makes things grow.
Sometimes,white clouds are like ships sailing across the sky.
Sometimes, the dark clouds bring us rain or snow. Sometimes, after the rain, you can see a very beautiful rainbow across the sky.
At night, we can seee thousands of stars and sometimes, the big round moon. The dark sky dotted with bright stars is like a picture! There is so much to see in our beautiful world.
good afternoon, honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, the title of my speech is defeat makes me more confident.
most people may think that defeat is a kind of obstacle that prevents you from being successful. quite the contrary, i believe defeat makes me more confident.
as you may know, if you can not be an excellent loser you will never win. everything in my life always shows both my advantages and disadvantages. i have been entering a lot of contests. i don’t care about the results, but feel it is more important to learn something during the process. after i failed in the contests each time, the judges always gave me useful comments and suggestion addressing my shortcomings and helped me improve myself step by step. so, now i am more self-confident to face any challenges and believe i will be the final winner in my life
I am losing friends left and right, well, actually, only left. Some friendships, however, have been strengthened during this election.
When I was 6, I learned a song: "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other's gold." Even as a child, I was a born raconteur, so I always had lots of friends. But, by the time I got to fourth grade, I was already getting into political brawls. Early on, I began living my politically active mother's joke, "My name, it opens some doors and closes others."
I learned to tone it down a bit by the time I got to college. As a theater major, it was fun in an acting class one day, when we each had to pretend to be another student. I chose to mimic a beautiful petite girl with long dark hair. She was my polar opposite, this former cheerleader-turned-hippie-princess named Michelle. She got a kick out of my impression of her. I thought it was cool that she could laugh at herself. We began a friendship that has brought us to the present day.
Yet we were always opposites. I am Roman Catholic, she is Jewish. I am tall, she is short. One rainy afternoon on campus, Michelle insisted on carrying the umbrella for both of us, (I don't think I stood up straight until the next day!)
Back then, she was as passionate a Democrat as I was a Republican. However, my friend and I still had something in common that was more important than all the differences. We shared the same values and they showed up in a dozen little ways. That is why we are friends almost 30 years later. Furthermore, she had been moving in my direction politically before, but Sept. 11, 20xx, brought us to a new level of communication. We have bonded even more during this election.
Sadly, I also have re-evaluated some other friendships as tensions increased due to the Kerry-Edwards demagoguery. This is the first time in memory that I've even been appalled by both spouses of the Democratic ticket. I rather liked Tipper Gore and Hadassa Lieberman. I thought they were sweet. And that's the way I used to feel about my liberal pals. But, now a Teresa Heinz-Kerry-like irrationality/Elizabeth Edwards snotty innuendo has infected some of them -- and it makes them unpleasant to be around.
This election may leave those friendships in its wake. The outlook is definitely not good for their Christmas card inclusion.
Sept. 11, Iraq, the demonization of Israel by Kerry's European fans, the beheadings -- all of the latter just doesn't seem to change the '90s mentality of those I know who are voting for the Democratic Party ticket. Like Kerry, they still seem to consider the United States' life-and-death struggle a nuisance. These liberal friends of mine are certainly not bad people, but deep down, they still don't get that we are at war with a greater evil than any of us has ever known. Combined with the extremism culturally on the left, these people are becoming more than a nuisance themselves.
The sobering fact is that these friendships are just too taxing (in both senses of that word). Those relationships have become like old prom dresses in that they just don't fit anymore. There comes a point where some associations can become a fire hazard in one's closet. It may be time to do spring cleaning, even if the season is autumn.
Sure, friends can't agree on everything, nor are they supposed to but though I may think someone's a nice person, fun, etc., increasingly deep differences in our world view can't be ignored in these frightening times.
Three decades later, Michelle is no longer the shorter-than-me actress who insisted on carrying the umbrella as we walked to class, though she is still shorter than me. But she and I easily walk together under an umbrella of shared concerns. A few weeks ago we sat side by side at a most moving event celebrating Jewish and Christian support of Israel and each other.
Yet, we still live very different lives. My college friend has been married for 25 years to the love of her life, the mother of three and an executive in an entertainment corporation. And meanwhile her single free-lancing writer/actress friend, even after all these years still does impressions of her only in print now.
Happily, others have also come along to become comrades in arms this election. They represent a diversity in lifestyle that would warm any liberal's heart (although said liberal wouldn't warm our hearts). There's Genie the stockbroker, Cathy the casting director, Robin the mom of one of my former acting students, Sally the daughter of one of my mother's old friends and many others. Their e-mail messages and calls let me know that though other friendships may wither during this election, I'm hardly alone. They all have a point of view that enables us to skip to shorthand. ("Did you read Drudge?" "Yep!") All of these women make up my own personal non-elitist version of "The View, The Conservative Cut."
Yes, now those old children's lyrics resonate with a new meaning in "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold." Regretfully, without shared values even after this tumultuous election of 20xx, some friendships may have turned to a tin that rings hollow in these perilous times.
By the way, I recently chatted with one of those former Brownies who sang with me so long ago, She is a "security mom." She is voting for George W. Bush and she will definitely be included on my Christmas card list.
