巨集偉的長江三峽工程主體建築物由橫跨長江的攔河大壩、位於其中段的洩洪壩段、左右岸發電廠房及通航建築物組成。它的建設方岸是:一級開發、一次建成、分期蓄水、連續移民。

攔河大壩以185平臺為左岸起點,延伸到長江南岸的白巖尖,軸線全長約為2309米,屬於混凝土重力壩(用混凝土澆築的依靠壩體的自重來對抗庫區的水壓和其它荷載作用不同於另一種壩—拱壩)。大壩建成之後,壩頂會形成一條溝通江南與江北的公路,寬度為15米,大壩底部寬度為124米,如果您從側面看這個大壩剖面,它呈現為直角梯形,大壩的海拔高程與185平臺等高,為海拔185米。這樣,萬里長江就將在西陵峽中段被攔腰截斷,從三峽大壩直至上游重慶市六百多公里的水路就將形成一個天然的河道型水庫,水庫容量為393億立方米,正常水庫水位是海拔175米,洪水來臨之前,將水位降低至海拔145米,這樣防洪庫容量達到221.5億立方米。

中段的洩洪壩段長483米,22個溢流表孔(寬為8米,堰頂高程156米,主要作用是洩洪)與23個溢流深孔(7米×9米,孔底高程為90米,主要作用是衝沙。)主要承擔渲洩洪水和清除泥沙的任務,洩洪的設計最大流量是11.6萬立方米/秒,相當於千年一遇的洪水流量,因為歷史上長江上最大的洪水發生於1870年,當時的最大水流量為10.8萬立方米/秒。黃陵廟的木柱上就留下了當時的水跡,這為我們的三峽工程的設計提供了珍貴的水文質料。相信1998年的洪水給大家留下了深刻的印象,荊江大堤全面告急、牌洲灣決口、九江新區被淹,直接經濟損失高達1600億,這次洪水的最大流量是6.8萬立方米/秒。所以在大壩竣工之後,荊江河段的防洪標準將大大提高。

位於洩洪壩段兩邊的是左右兩個壩後式廠房,模型上的圓孔代表我們將來要安裝的水電機組的臺數,我們將在左岸發電廠房安裝14臺水電機組,右岸發電廠房安裝12臺水電機組,每臺機組的單機容量為70萬千瓦。相當於一個丹江口水電站的發電量。這樣大容量的發電機組目前在全世界僅有21臺,其中目前居世界第一位的巴西和巴拉圭合建的伊泰普水電站擁有18臺,目前居世界第三位的美國大古力水電站擁有3臺,而將來三峽水電站將擁有26臺水電機組(每臺機組重達600噸超過埃菲爾鐵塔),總裝機容量達1820萬千瓦,年發電量847依度,相當於葛洲壩水電站年發電量的6.5倍,相當於廣東大亞灣核電站年發電量的10倍,於當今世界最大的伊泰普水電站相比,其三峽大壩為中心,可以輸送到1200平方公里左右,最東—上海;最西—蘭州;最南—廣州;最北—天津,源源不斷地輸向華中、華東和四川東部地區,促進這些地區的水電開發和經濟騰飛,實現“西電東送”的戰略格局。水能是清潔的可再生能源,不會消耗自然資源和造成環境汙染。三峽工程每年可以節約四千萬噸至五千萬噸的原煤,減少火力發電,減輕環境汙染,從而優化中國的能源結構。
