北海銀灘西起僑港鎮漁港，東至大冠沙，由西區、東區和海域沙灘區組成，東西綿延約24公里，海灘寬度在30--3000米之間，陸地面積12平方公里，總面積約38平方公里。面積超過大連、煙臺、青島、廈門和北戴河海濱浴場沙灘的總和，而平均坡度僅為0.05。 沙灘均由高品位的石英砂堆積而成，在陽光的照射下，潔白、細膩的沙灘會泛出銀光，故稱銀灘，北海銀灘以其“灘長平、沙細白、水溫淨、浪柔軟、無鯊魚”的特點，被譽為“天下第一灘”。
